Collins Engineers, Inc. offers an opportunity for a civil engineering student to gain experience doing structural inspections. The Chicago, IL office has an opening for a Structural Engineering Intern position for the Summer of 2021. We are looking for a college student with an interest in structural engineering that is in their sophomore or junior year. You will be paired with professional licensed engineers and assist with bridge inspections, create reports using data collected from field sites, and assist in preparing design calculations. You will be able to get hands-on experience collaborating on structural engineering inspection and design projects and working on other various tasks with our seasoned engineers.


This position will be a combination of office and field work.

Position Description

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist on structural inspections.
  • Prepare inspection reports.
  • Properly checks other team members’ calculations.
  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Field work will be required.


  • Sophomore or junior working towards a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college. 
  • Previous software experience in AutoCAD, MicroStation, Blue Beam, or Civil 3D is a plus.
  • Previous software experience in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe PDF or other PDF editing software is a plus. 
  • A valid driver's license.
