Collins is seeking a qualified Survey Crew Chief to grow our geomatics group in the Chicago metro area. We are looking for a survey professional who is interested in helping to build a cutting-edge survey group utilizing the most advanced geospatial tools available. This position can be based in either our Chicago or Lombard office, and may periodically include overnight travel to other office locations based on project needs.

 

The ideal candidate will have experience leading survey crews, possess proven communication, leadership, and planning skills, and have the ability to act quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines.

Position Description

SUMMARY

 

The Survey Crew Chief coordinates and/or assists in surveying operations. Majority of time in spent in the field and could involve working weekends and overnight. 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs field surveys on a one or two-person survey crew.
  • Conducts surveys primarily focusing on construction layout of heavy infrastructure projects, but also including control surveys, topographic surveys, utility surveys, right-of-way surveys, boundary surveys and deformation monitoring.
  • Conducts construction layout for transportation infrastructure including temporary shoring, excavation, pile layout, beam seats, deck grades, storm sewer and road layout.
  • Provides input into project scoping, including: estimating, assessing staffing needs, project scheduling, and coordination.
  • Performs point and model data management, data reduction and stake out file creation using Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Associate of Science or Bachelor of Science degree in Land Surveying or Civil Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 3 years of previous work experience in land surveying.
  • Previous experience leading a survey crew.
  • Background in modern survey methods including use of 3D models, robotic total stations, GPS, data collectors, UAS, LiDAR scanning and stringless construction.
  • Path to registration as a professional land surveyor preferred, but not required.
